Why Your Windows Streak in Jackson, and What Actually Fixes It

Most window streaking is not a technique problem, it is a diagnosis problem. Three very different things land on glass in this valley, and each one shrugs off the treatment that works on the others.

Hard water spotting comes from sprinklers and irrigation overspray. It is a mineral deposit bonded to the glass, and no amount of soap and squeegee will move it. It needs an acidic treatment with dwell time, and if it has been baked on through a couple of summers it may have etched the pane permanently. Catching it in the first season is the difference between a cleaning and a replacement.

Pine sap and road film are organic and oily. They need a solvent and a little patience, not more scrubbing. Scrubbing a sap spot with a dry cloth is how fine scratches get into glass, and once they are in they catch the light forever.

Winter grit is the dangerous one. The sand and cinder that comes off the pass and off the plows is abrasive. Squeegee a gritty window without flooding and lifting that grit off first and you are dragging sandpaper across the pane. It is the most common way homeowners scratch their own windows.

Two things make the biggest difference regardless of cause. First, clean the tracks and sills, because grit sitting in a track washes back onto the glass with the next rain and undoes the whole job. Second, dry the frames by hand. Water left in a frame runs down the pane an hour later, which is the streak most people blame on the cleaning solution.
